Aaryan Amburgey and Penny Sims

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office posted the following on its Facebook page Thursday afternoon:

On 05/12/2022 at approximately 2:00am Deputy Zach Sandlin attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling South on Hwy 183 out of Goldthwaite. The vehicle refused to stop even though Deputy Sandlins lights and siren were activated. The pursuit did not reach high speeds and averaged approximately 70mph. At one point the passenger of the suspect vehicle brandished a pistol out the window in an apparent attempt to scare away Deputy Sandlin. When this did not work, the passenger began shooting multiple rounds towards Deputy Sandlins patrol vehicle. Neither Deputy Sandlin or his vehicle were struck.

While this was happening Deputy Justin Guimbellot was catching up with Deputy Sandlin. The suspect vehicle made an abrupt turn on to CR 410. Deputy Sandlin waited for Deputy Guimbellot to catch up before trying to approach the vehicle further. When Deputies did approach both the driver and passenger had abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot in an unknown direction.

The vehicle was secured and a coordinated effort was started to locate the fugitives.

The assisting agencies included were Texas Highway Patrol, Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Game Wardens, Texas Rangers, Texas DPS Aviation, Texas Dept. Criminal Justice tracking dogs, Texas DPS Search and Rescue Team and most all of our Deputies. A perimeter around the area was set and ground units patrolled constantly.

The FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) unit mounted in the airplane was invaluable as it was able to locate one of the fugitives hiding in the thick brush soon after it arrived in the area. The fugitive was later identified as 31-year-old Aaryan Amburgey. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Several hours later the second fugitive was located and also taken into custody without incident. The second fugitive was later identified as 29-year-old Penny Sims.

The preliminary investigation shows the vehicle and pistol to be possibly stolen.

Sims is charged with EVADING ARREST/DETENTION W/VEH.

Amburgey has been charged with UNL POSS FIREARM BY FELON and AGG ASSAULT AGAINST PUBLIC SERVANT. Other charges may be pending.
