Haynes re-elected Brownwood mayor, Brookesmith school bond fails

Stephen Haynes will continue to serve as the mayor of Brownwood, while the Brookesmith’s ISD $9.95 million bond failed according to the final results of Saturday’s city elections.

Haynes, who has been mayor of Brownwood for 12 years, easily defeated his opponent Patrick McLaughlin IV by receiving 72.96 percent of the vote (741 votes) compared to 26.71% (270 votes). A total of 1,011 ballots were cast in the mayoral race.

The Brookesmith bond election ended in a similar margin as 77.29% (245) voted against the proposal to just 22.71% (72) voting in favor. The money was to be used for various projects throughout the district, such as new HVAC equipment, campus renovations and improvements, acquisition of land and a possible football/track and athletic complex.

In other local races Saturday, the two open positions on the Brown County Water Improvement District #1 Board will be filled by Brad Simpson with 35.59% (510) of the vote and incumbent Bert Massey with 34.38% (492). Joe Stieber was the third man in the race, receiving 29.73% (426 votes).

The Bangs City Council had three open seats heading into Saturday’s election which will be filled by Greg Parrott with 28.27% (119) of the vote, Waymond Sheppard with 21.14% (89) and William Loyd with 20.19% (85 votes). Also running were Danny Marney with 19.71% (83 votes) and incumbent Marisa Craddock with 10.69% (45 votes).

Filling the two expired seats on the Bangs School Board will be incumbent Eric Lykins with 37.76% (296) of the vote and Dennis Sanchez with 32.4% (254 votes), while Sandy Lehman received 29.85% (234 votes).

Joshua Purcell won the election for the unexpired term on the Bangs School Board garnering 52.18% (275) of the vote compared to 27.7% (146 votes) for Jennifer Valdez McCoy and 20.11% (106 votes) for Brook Loyd.

Bobby Brinson will remain on the Early School Board as in the race for Place 4, he received 72.96% (259) of the vote compared to his opponent Andrew Castanuela’s 27.04% (96 votes).
