The appointment of Jennifer Broughton as Brown County Attorney didn’t happen Monday morning but will likely happen next Monday morning, March 14.

Brown County Commissioners had on their agenda Monday, March 7, possible appointment for the County Attorney position, an item brought to the agenda by Precinct 1 Commissioner Gary Worley.

“When Shane Britton (current County Attorney) ran for County Judge we talked about not appointing a County Attorney until after the March Primary.  It’s now after the Primary, there was no Democratic opponent, Mrs. Broughton didn’t have an opponent in the Republican Primary so she, in November, will be the County Attorney elect,” said Gary Worley, Commissioner Precinct 1.  Broughton was unable to attend the meeting due to previous vacation plans.

“I’ve spoken with her and Shane has spoken with her.  She would like to have a start date of April 1.  We can either go ahead and appoint her this morning to take office on April 1, or can wait until next week when she gets here or we can wait until April 1st, whatever we want to do,” Worley stated.

County Attorney Shane Britton recommended that the appointment of Broughton be made after the election has been canvassed.

“We just need to wait until after they canvass the vote,” Britton said.  “I would just do it  next Monday and maybe we’ll ask Larry (Elections Administrator) about canvassing the votes at the same time,” Britton said.

No action was taken and the appointment of the county attorney will be back on the agenda for the March 14 meeting of Brown County Commissioners.

In other business:

Commissioners heard the bi-weekly COVID report from Lisa Dick of the Brownwood/Brown County Health Department.  The latest report from Friday, March 4, showed zero current hospitalizations in Brown County, three deaths last week and 16 positive cases reported last week.

The Burn Ban remains in effect since no significant rain has been received and conditions remain very dry.

No action was taken on possible approval of employees changes in the Sheriff’s Department since no one from the department was able to attend the meeting.
