On Saturday, February 19, the Brownwood High School (BHS) UIL academic coaches sponsored a practice competition at BHS. Nine schools participated with over 200 students taking part in 23 academic, speech, and debate events.

Lampasas High School was the overall sweepstakes winner, with Rochelle taking the runner-up honors. BHS students placed in the following events:

Brooke Minchey – Headline Writing – 4th place
Aishwarya Nigalye – Mathematics – 4th place
Claire Clayton – Spelling & Vocabulary – 1st place
Alleson Jameson – Literary Criticism – 4th place
Kate Tindol – Ready Writing – 4th place
Rylie Schafer – Ready Writing – 5th place
Olivia Ringer – Ready Writing – 6th place
Brianna Castaneda – Accounting – 2nd place
Luke Russell and Lexi Waddell – Accounting – tie for 5th place
Aishwarya Nigalye – Number Sense – 1st place

The BHS Academic coaches are Stacee Hetzel (accounting), Justin Moore (science), Brooklyn Britton (Literary Criticism), Brittany Martin (Journalism events), Joanna Young (math events), Edward Yantis (Computer Science), Cherita Mungia (Ready Writing and Spelling), Shannon Lee (Prose and Poetry Interpretation), and Kenan Boland (Social Studies, Current Events, Speech/Debate).

“These coaches did an amazing job hosting,” said UIL coach Kenan Boland. “A special thank you to Elizabeth Ripley, the Culinary Arts teacher at BHS, for providing an awesome hospitality room for all the visiting coaches and judges. She received rave reviews for her tater tot casserole, breakfast pizza, and chili.”

The UIL Academic and Speech/Debate teams will compete at their district competitions on March 21 and 22. Students that place in the top 3 in each event will move on to the Regional Academic Competition in April at Texas Tech University.
