‘Out of the Box’ with Dallas Huston: Looking ahead to the Super Bowl

I am very much looking forward to the Super Bowl here in 2022. One of the reasons is because back in August when somebody asked me, “Who do you think will win the Super Bowl this year?” I said, “I think the L.A. Rams might do it.” When asked why, I said, “Because I think Matthew Stafford is a great quarterback but has just been on a bad team.” When the Rams got him and a couple of other players, I said, “Why not?”

I’m excited the Stafford has the opportunity to win the big game. Of course, I wanted him to be playing against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. The reason is because Mahomes has a little connection to Brownwood. So does Stafford.

Stafford played his high school ball at Highland Park in Dallas. Played his college ball at Georgia. At Highland Park, he was coached by Randy Allen, who previously coached the Brownwood Lions. Meanwhile, Mahomes, who is from Whitehouse and played his high school ball there, went to Tech, and had no connection to Brownwood until a young man named Jake Parker came to play football at Howard Payne.

Parker was a close friend of Mahomes and his favorite receiver in high school. Mahomes, of course, went to the NFL. Parker, after working in the oil fields for a few years, decided to come to Brownwood and play for the Jackets, and play very well. Mahomes and Parker are still close.

Last spring, when the Jackets only got to play five games because of COVID, Mahomes decided to show up and watch his friend play. He sat and watched the game next to the “Walk of Champions” at Gordon Wood Stadium. After the game, he went into the home locker room and spoke to the Howard Payne team. He seemed to be a class guy and a guy you would want to pull for. But he now has no game to play since Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals have taken their place in the Super Bowl.

So, who will win the big game? I have a gut feeling it just might be the Bengals but since I picked them back in August, I have to say “Go Rams.”

Finally, what about those long-suffering Cowboy fans.

First, get realistic. This season, they had a little above average team. Had they been in a stronger division, the would have been below average. For the money they spent, they should have close to the greatest quarterback in the league. They don’t.

For the money they spent, they should have the best running back in the league. They don’t.

The coach is certainly not the best. The owner? Get serious.

Gordon Wood used to say concerning winning a state championship, “You’ve got to be good enough, lucky enough, and hot enough.” I believe it’s the same in the NFL.

The Cowboys simply need to get good enough, then worry about the other two later.

Until next time, so long everybody.
