HarvesTime Tabernacle’s Disciples of Harvest motorcycle ministry on Monday donated 24 bicycles and two tricycles to Toys for Kids for the upcoming Christmas season.

“Last year we started partnering with Wanda (Martin) and Toys for Kids and started getting bikes and making sure each kid that wanted a bike can get one,” said Charlie Walters, vice president of the Disciples of Harvest motorcycle ministry. “We traveled to the Metroplex and picked up a bunch of bikes over the weekend, then came back and met as a church for about 2 ½ to 3 hours and put all the bikes together to deliver them today.”

Walters’ wife, Carrie, is the daughter of Wanda Thacker Martin, who with her late husband Dennis Thacker founded Toys for Kids in 1997. The Walters are members of HarvesTime Tabernacle in Early.

Regarding the importance of donating to the program, Walters said, “The Word teaches us to have a servant’s heart so to be able to do that and help kids that are in need and be able to provide for our community means a lot. Being able, as church organization, as a ministry, to reach out and be Jesus when other people may not always see Jesus in people, being that person that gets to help the kids and show that servant’s heart and try to be that example is huge to us.”

The Disciples of Harvest motorcycle ministry also donated its time last year on distribution day as they were in charge of traffic control at Grand Starz. Walters encourages others to donate in any way possible for local children this Christmas.

“Anything you can do, whether it’s monetary, whether it’s going to buy a gift, whether it’s volunteering your time, especially these days when there are a lot of people that have nothing, anything you can do to help somebody else in need I would just say take the time out of your day to help others,” Walters said.

Those who would like to sign up for Toys for Kids can do so from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Monday, Nov. 29.

Distribution day for toys is slated for Saturday, Dec. 18.
