Volleyball playoffs are underway now, and the football playoffs start next week.  All teams in the playoffs dream of a state championship, but of course only one team in each sport will win state.

But did you know that the Texas UIL each school year awards an overall state championship in each classification?  It is called the Lone Star Cup, and it is based on each school’s overall team achievement in the following sanctioned UIL Academic/Athletic/Music competitions:

*** Academic State

*** Baseball

*** Basketball

*** Congress

*** Cross Country (Individual Sport)

*** Film

*** Football

*** Golf (Individual Sport)

*** Marching Band

*** Mariachi Band

*** One-Act Play

*** Robotics

*** Soccer

*** Softball

*** Spirit

*** Swimming and Diving (Individual Sport)

*** Team Tennis

*** Tennis

*** Theatrical Design

*** Track and Field (Individual Sport)

***Volleyball

*** Wrestling (Individual Sport)

Standings for the Lone Star Cup are compiled via a year-long accumulation of points based on team success at the district and state level.  The points awarded vary for each competition, but for instance in football and other team sports:

First place in District……………. 4 points

Playoff Berth ……………………….  2 points

Each playoff victory ……………..  2 points

State Championship …………….  4 points
