Jo Ann Mills, age 88, of Brownwood passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at Songbird Lodge Nursing Home.
She was born June 17, 1933 in Brownwood the daughter of Mack and Millie McCarty. She grew up and has lived all her life in Brownwood. Following graduation from high school in which she was the first in her family to graduate, and did so at the top of her class, she began working. She worked at the Rock Woolen Mills for 27 years as a supervisor and later for A & B Building Maintenance as a supervisor for 14 years prior to retiring. She was a strong advocate for civil rights and had a partner relationship for over 43 years with Joann Cochran.
She is survived by her daughter, Vanessa Bishop and husband Michael of Lake Brownwood, her son Doyle Mills and his partner, Stacy Brown of Alto, New Mexico, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Hoyt “Pete” Mills and four siblings and her partner, Joann Cochran.
She will buried with private family services at Greenleaf Cemetery.
