Wayne Nelson

John Wayne Nelson, age 93, of May, passed away July 29, 2021 at home surrounded by family. Graveside funeral services for Wayne will be held on Monday, August 2, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the May Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the cemetery prior to services beginning at 1:30 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home in Early.

Wayne was born to Ira and Thelma (Witt) Nelson on April 18, 1928 in May. He graduated from May high school, and then served in the U.S. Navy. After serving, he was owner and operator of Nelson Peanut Dryer, and also worked as a farmer and rancher. Wayne married Carol Read Nelson on July 13, 1968 in Fort Worth. Together, they became avid members of the May 1st Baptist Church.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Nelson; children, Donna Ahlders, John Nelson, Janet Nelson, Kenneth Hignight and wife Debra; grandchildren, Melissa Harrell, Joel Nelson, Brad Nelson, Micah Hignight, Sarah Hignight, and Jacob Hignight; seven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mamie Lois Quimby; and his daughter, Laura Grace Nelson.

The family would like to wish a special thank-you to Kindred Hospice, Dr. Joanne Paulk, and Lisa Smith.
