SALSA is pleased to announce the 2021 class of Mexican American Trailblazers of Brownwood. Raul Garcia, SALSA spokesperson, said “They have all been the “first” Mejicanos from Brownwood to do what they have done, and have done it exceptionally well. They set a very high standard in their respective fields, for which others should strive. Their lives and careers have made all Mejicanos proud and they are worthy of this recognition.” They are:

Sara Gomez- first businesswoman (60 years)

Mary Acuña- first appointed official (60 years)

Ray Delgado- first to die in battle (1969)

Johnny Deanda- first elected official(1972), DJ, entertainment promoter

Zenaido Camacho- first in medical field – Baylor Medical Center, Rice University, Texas Tech, University of Colorado at Denver (50+ years)

Dr. Juan Andrade, said “All of these outstanding individuals, descendants of the first generation of Mexicanos who settled in Brownwood over 100 years ago, have blazed a trail that has brought honor and pride to our community. Brownwood is better for their service, and all are role models in their own right.”

Also being honored are Alysia Karolina Rivas Mata and MirianMarquez. Both graduated as valedictorians of their 2021 high school graduating classes, Alysia at Brookesmith and Mirianat Blanket. Each received a $1,000 scholarship, raising to $8,000 the amount awarded by the group this spring.
