During Monday’s edition of the Brownwood Lions Coach’s Show on KOXE, athletic director Sammy Burnett announced the addition of two coaches to the staff for the 2021-22 school year.

Brownwood High School and Howard Payne University graduate Michael Westerman has been hired to take over the Lions soccer program.

“He’s a Brownwood boy, a soccer kid all the way, he went to Howard Payne and played soccer in college and then GA’ed and coached some soccer,” Burnett said. “He’s been working at a youth facility in the Metroplex area and has implemented a soccer program there for them to give them some direction. He understands how to work with kids in the profession he’s in right now dealing with at-risk kids. He knocked his interview out when he met with the administration, Dr. Young and everyone was pleased with him. With the enthusiasm he has, and he has great soccer knowledge, I’m excited about what he’s going to bring.”

Craig Jackson will join the football staff as the new defensive line coach, and may also work with the offensive line, according to Burnett.

“Craig is a veteran coach which is important for us,” Burnett said. “We’ve got a veteran staff and I think he’s going to blend right in. He’s a diligent worker and coached (defensive coordinator) Brett Mouser when Brett was in high school and worked with Brett’s father. He’s been around, he knows his business, he understands the teaching profession. He’s coming over from Sweetwater, Coach (Russell) Lucas got the job over there and of course there’s transition with their coaching staff. He had an opportunity to stay and work there but saw an opportunity that he could come over here and do something with us and we’re glad to have him.”
