Morris, Stegemoller, Yebra compete at state track meet

AUSTIN – The first three of nine Brown County entries in the UIL Track and Field State Championships competed Thursday at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Brownwood Lady Lion junior Kylie Morris finished 6th in the Class 4A girls triple jump with a best effort of 36-8 Thursday afternoon.

Morris entered the state meet with the seventh-best regional performance among the nine state qualifiers, and climbed a spot during the competition. Morris’ best jump came on her third attempt, where at that point she made the move from seventh to fifth place. Jacqueline Garcia of Hildago (37-1.5) moved ahead of Morris on the last of her six jumps.

Leah Anderson of Midlothian Heritage won the 4A girls triple jump state championship with a leap of 38-10.25, while Allie Estrada of Beeville Jones (38-5) earned the silver medal and Kiyleyah Parr of La Vega (38-0) captured the bronze medal.

Morris jumped 36-11.25 at the Region I-4A meet, finishing second, to qualify for state after capturing the area championship with a 36-3.5 effort. Morris jumped 36-0.5 at the District 6-4A meet.

Lady Lion freshman Emma Stegemoller finished 9th in the Class 4A girls 800 meters in a time of 2:27.72.

Canyon’s Abree Winfrey won the state championship in a time of 2:10.97 followed by silver medalist Adele Clarke of Celina (2:11.47) and bronze medalist Taylor Grona of Fredericksburg (2:16.29).

Stegemoller sat in seventh place after one lap, clocking a time of 1:07.49 over 400 meters.

Stegemoller advanced to state as the wild card, the best third-place performer from all four regions across the state, with a 2:22.33 effort at the Region I meet. Stegemoller placed second at area in a time of 2:26.27 and second at the District 6-4A meet with a time of 2:27.83.

Early Lady Horn senior Grecia Yebra finished 8th in the Class 3A girls 200 meters with a time of 26.07.

Newton’s Jayla Franklin won the state title in a time of 24.24 followed by silver medalist Jaysa Coney of Palestine Westwood (25.22) and bronze medalist Brandi Drake of Cameron Yoe (25.32).

Yebra ran a 25.39 to earn the Region I-3A championship and qualify for the state meet.

On Saturday, six more Brown County entries will vie for state medals: Brookesmith’s Avery Williamson in the boys triple jump at 1 p.m., the Brookesmith boys 4×100 relay team of Clayton Adame, Randall Williams, Avery Williford, Johnathan Willoughby and alternate Trey Toft at 5 p.m., May’s Reese Chambers in the girls 100 meters at 6:05 p.m., the Brookesmith boys 4×200 relay team of Adame, Williams, Williford, Willoughby and alternate Toft at 6:25 p.m., Blanket’s Tyler Simpson in the boys 400 meters at 6:45 p.m., and Williford in the boys 100 meters at 7:30 p.m.
