The City of Brownwood in October 2020 announced a new multipurpose event center will be built in the downtown area within two years. The redevelopment project is located in the vicinity 700 block of E. Baker Street and Lee Street, where the former ice house stood. Plans to use the ice house foundation for a portion of the new center have been altered, however.

“Geotechnical analysis showed that the remaining slab at the old Ice House location cannot be reused as part of the new event center project because of age and condition,” Brownwood Municipal Development District Executive Director Ray Tipton said in a statement. “That is not totally unexpected, but we wanted to make sure before we demolished the remaining portion of the structure. The architects are currently designing that portion of the project and new renderings should be available soon.”

BRW Architects of College Station is in charge of the project, which will create a new indoor and outdoor event space to host events and conventions.

Estimates on the cost of removing one foundation and installing another are not currently available, according to city officials, who added the additional cost isn’t anticipated to be too far outside what has been budgeted for the overall project.

The estimated cost of the entire project was $8,900,000 according to a press release issued by the City of Brownwood on Oct. 13, 2020. Funding for the construction of the project will come entirely from economic development sales tax dollars that have been saved over the past few years.

Additional information on the project will be provided as it becomes available.
