Lady Jackets soccer captures season finale, 2-1 over Concordia

The Howard Payne Lady Jackets soccer team saved their best performance of the season for last, notching a 2-1 victory over Concordia in the American Southwest Conference and regular season finale Saturday at Citizens National Bank Field.

With 19:54 left in the contest, HPU’s Lindsey Schiller recorded the winning goal with an assist from Marisah Mata and Kaegan Sims.

The Lady Jackets grabbed a 1-0 lead with 18:12 left in the first half as Carrie Gerdes found the net with an assist from Kendra Cecil.

Concordia knotted the score at 1 just four seconds before halftime as Cayla Gonzalez tallied a goal.

Howard Payne finished with five shots, including three on goal – by two by Gerdes and one by Schiller.

Concordia took 21 shots with 10 on goal as Delaney Castor registered nine saves for HPU.

The Lady Jackets concluded their season with a 1-7 overall record, 1-6 in conference play.

Concordia 2, Yellow Jackets 1

The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets came up short in their final American Southwest Conerence men’s soccer match of the season Saturday, dropping a 2-1 decision at home to Concordia.

Tied at 1 with 20 seconds left, the Yellow Jackets surrendered the decisive goal as Timothy Barney found the back of the net for the Tornados.

Concordia grabbed a 1-0 lead 7:33 into the contest on a goal by Victor Gomez, but Howard Payne drew even with 9:35 left in the first half on a team goal.

The Yellow Jackets finished with five shots – two by Homero Pena and one each by Zachary Moreno, Alexander Paz and Obed Santos.

Concordia took 18 shots with 11 on target as Eduardo Flores finished with nine saves for HPU.

The Yellow Jackets concluded their season with a 1-7 overall record, 1-6 in conference play.
