Lions come up short in final two games at Abilene ISD baseball tournament

ABILENE – The Brownwood Lions came up on the short end of the final two games at the Abilene ISD baseball tournament Friday, falling to Abilene Wylie, 3-1, and Midland High, 14-3.

Against Wylie, the Lions were limited to four hits – two by Hunter Day and one each by Byron Foster and Reece Bolton, who drove in Brownwood’s lone run.

Wylie took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Brownwood tied it in the bottom half, but the Bulldogs tacked on additional runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

On the mound, Xadrian Mares and David Turner combined to yield two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Against Midland, the Lions fell behind 3-0 in the second inning and trailed 5-1 after three, 11-2 after four and the game ended in the fifth frame.

Brownwood tallied three hits by Owen Huntsinger, Trynten Slaughter and Case Markham. Bolton and Slaughter tallied RBIs.

Miller, Kaden Bessent and Markham combined to give up three earned runs on seven hits with eight walks and seven strikeouts. Defensively, Brownwood committed four errors.

The Lions (5-5) resume District 6-4A baseball action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host Lampasas.
