Lady Jackets split twin bill with Jarvis Christian, University of the Southwest

HAWKINS – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets split a non-conference volleyball doubleheader against Jarvis Christian and University of the Southwest Thursday night.

The Lady Jackets defeated Jarvis Christian, 30-32, 25-12, 25-16, 25-22 as all of Howard Payne’s victories this season have come against the Lady Bulldogs.

Mya Ross led HPU with 14 kills followed by 12 from Mitsue Rodriguez, eight from Canyon Hughes, five from Amaya Marshall, four from Riley Britain and two from Delaney Etzler.

Britain dished out 29 assists followed by Kaitlyn Esten with 11, Ross with three and Hughes with one.

Daisy Flores served four aces while Britain, Ross and Rodriguez each chipped in one.

Defensively, Chloe Pryor’s 20 digs were a team-best trailed by Ross with 11, Britain with nine, Flores with six, Hughes with three, and Rodriguez, Elsten and Marshall with one each.

Britain, Hughes and Marshall finished with three blocks apiece, Etzler added two and Ross tallied one.

Later Thursday, the Lady Jackets fell in straight sets to University of the Southwest, 25-22, 25-22, 25-17.

Ross again led the way with nine kills followed by Marshall with eight, Fabianna Bennett with five, Rodriguez with four, Brittain with three, and Etzler with one.

Britain distributed 18 assists trailed by Elsten with nine and Pryor with one.

Flores served the Lady Jackets’ only ace.

On the defensive end, Ross logged 14 digs followed by Pryor with 13, Rodriguez with seven, Britain, Elsten and Marshall with five apiece, Flores with three, Etzler with two, and Bennett and Hughes with one each.

Rodriguez and Marshall registered two blocks apiece and Ross and Britain both added one.

Howard Payne (3-9, 0-8) is back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday with an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Sul Ross.
