BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Zephyr, May girls headed to playoffs as No. 2 seeds

The Zephyr Lady Bulldogs defeated Gustine, 40-32, Tuesday night in Hamilton while the No. 8 May Lady Tigers were nipped by No. 9 Eula, 48-45, in Cross Plans in girls basketball seeding contests.

With the win, Zephyr will be the No. 2 seed from District 18-A and face District 17-A No. 3 seed Cherokee at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Hamilton in bi-district action.

May, the second seed from District 13-A, will compete in the bi-district round against District 14-A third seed Highland at a time, date and play yet to be determined.

Blanket Tigers 56, Evant 26

BLANKET – The Blanket Tigers secured the District 18-A boys basketball second playoff seed with a 56-26 win over Evant Tuesday.

Tyler Simpson, who is bound for Angelo State on a football scholarship, led the Tigers with 28 points while Hector Castaneda chipped in 16.

Early Longhorns 66, Bangs Dragons 31

EARLY – The Early Longhorns remained in the District 8-3A playoff hunt with a 66-31 victory over the rival Bangs Dragons Tuesday night.

The Longhorns led 15-5 after one quarter, 28-17 at halftime and 50-23 through three frames.

Ethan Mitchell paced Early with 26 points followed by Jaxyn Price and Vic Cooper with 12 each.

Logan Massey led Bangs with 10 points.

Early visits third-place Dublin Wednesday in a make-up game and Comanche Friday. The Longhorns are currently tied with Comanche for the fourth and final playoff seed out of District 8-3A.
