Lady Jackets move into first-place tie in ASC West with 63-56 win over UMHB

The Howard Payne Lady Jackets improved to 3-1 in American Southwest Conference action with their third consecutive victory, 63-56 over the Mary Hardin-Baylor Lady Crusaders Saturday night at the Brownwood Coliseum.

With the win, Howard Payne (6-4, 3-1) moved into a share of first place in the American Southwest Conference West Division with No. 8 Hardin-Simmons (11-3, 6-2) as both teams have won 75 percent of their league outings.

The Lady Jackets led 11-9 after one quarter, 29-22 at halftime and 45-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Howard Payne shot 37 percent (18 of 49) from the floor, 28 percent (5 of 18) from three-point land, and 63 percent (22 of 35) at the free throw line. The Lady Jackets were outrebounded 41-39, but forced 26 turnovers.

Bria Neal scored 20 points to pace HPU followed by ASC West Player of the Week Chelsey Harris with 14, Amanda Turpin with nine, Mallory Garcia with eight, Salina Ali with five, Lily Janek with four, and Kayla Brigance with three points.

UMHB (8-6, 4-5) knocked down just 34 percent (19 of 56) of its shots, 17 percent (2 of 12) of its treys, and 64 percent (16 of 25) of its free throws.

Allaira Jones was the only UMHB player to reach double figures in points, scoring 19.

Howard Payne will next visit Hardin-Simmons at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
