The Twin Rodeo Queens ride again! Raye S. King, 98, of Coleman, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.
A celebration of a life well lived will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2021 at First United Methodist Church, 500 West Liveoak Street, Coleman, with Dr. David Medley officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Anita Raye Stone on January 27, 1922 to Montie L. Stone and Bertie Duncan Stone, at home in Cross Cut in Brown County. At the age of seven, she and her family moved from the Valley to the Stone Ranch at Talpa. Raye graduated from Talpa High School, attended Tarleton State University and graduated from Texas Tech University. Raye taught Home Economics at Coleman I.S.D., Star I.S.D and at Centennial School, where she also coached basketball.
Raye was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Coleman, where she taught the Dunson Sunday School class and served on the Altar Committee, making bread for communion. She was also a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, the Circle C Cattlewomen, the Fine Arts League of Coleman County, the Garden Club and the Happy Quilters Club. Raye loved sewing, making clothes for her children and loved cooking for everybody. Raye also painted birds on the front of cards—her favorite being roadrunners.
Survivors include one daughter, Mitzi King Mays of Coleman; one sister, Dorise Watson of Midland; eight grandchildren, Jolian Mays Shaw and husband, Bryan, of Dallas, Will Mays and wife, Randi, of Dallas, Gus Mays of Temple, King Mays of Elgin, Kody King and wife, Lindsey, of Miami, Kelly Marshall and husband, Wilson, of Midkiff, Becky Steele and husband, Robert, of San Angelo and Riley Rosario and husband, Alberto, of Big Spring. Also surviving are numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Raye was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd S. King; her son, Rocky King; her identical twin sister, Faye King; grandson, Brent King and great grandson, Griffin Shaw.
