The Brownwood Art Association will feature the photography works of Julie Mize, BAA 2021 Artist of the Year, at the Art Center Nov. 5 – 21.

Mize teaches art at Brownwood Middle School and is an adjunct instructor of art at Howard Payne University.

“The majority of artworks in this exhibit are black-and-white photographs taken with film in a 1976 Nikon that originally was my father’s,” Mize said. The exhibit also features some digital and iPhone photographs.

“While I prefer film, there are photography apps I enjoy experimenting with for different effects. I also included watercolor paintings and mixed media drawings in the show,” she said. “In these pieces I have explored different ways of layering images or ideas.”

The show opens with a First Thursday reception at the Art Center Nov. 5, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the BAA Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave. Masks and social distancing are mandatory at all Art Association events.

A native of Houston, Mize earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard Payne University as an art major and began teaching elementary art in Alief ISD in 1997. She moved to Brownwood in 2000 after marrying her husband Kyle and began teaching art at Brownwood Middle School. In 2006 she completed a Master of Art Education degree from Texas Tech University and in 2008 became an adjunct instructor at Howard Payne University, teaching photography and other classes in the art department.

Mize’s art is strongly influenced by a deep connection to nature and childhood travel to New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

“Landscapes that were different from my neighborhood and the city scenes around me influenced my awareness of the world and sense of place,” she noted. “As a result, in my photographs and other artworks, my subjects gravitate toward things of nature, or of details that I find interesting within larger objects or spaces.”

As Artist of the Year, Mize’s black and white photograph “Snowy Meditations” will be featured on the cover of the upcoming 2021 Membership Directory.

The show opens with a First Thursday reception at the Art Center Nov. 5, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the BAA Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave. The Art Center will be open to the public Thursdays, Nov. 12 and 19 from 5 to 7:30, and Saturdays Nov. 7, 14 and 21 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.  Julie will also be available in person Wednesdays, Nov. 11 and 18, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss her work and answer questions.

Masks and social distancing are mandatory at all Art Association events. For more information on Brownwood Art Association events, classes and competitions, visit their website at brownwoodart.com.
