WEEK 7 GRIDIRON REWIND: May, Blanket, Richland Springs, Comanche, Coleman win district openers

GORMAN – The Class A Division I No. 6 May Tigers began their quest for a fifth straight district title with a 49-0 win over the Gorman Panthers in the 13-A opener for both teams Friday night.

May (6-1, 1-0) – which collected its fifth win in a row – led 21-0 after one quarter, 43-0 at halftime and added its final touchdown in the third period to enforce the 45-point mercy rule.

The Tigers needed just 146 total yards – 96 rushing and 50 passing – to get the job done against the Gorman (3-4, 0-1) defense.

Rory Bustamante rushed for 43 yards and two touchdowns while Isidro Salinas added 27 yards, Kaden Halk chipped in 20 yards and Hayden King finished with 6 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Blake Harrell threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Salinas while Chris Flenniken caught a 7-yard pass from Bustamante.

Halk also returned a kick 60 yards for a Tiger touchdown, and intercepted a pass that he returned 80 yards for six points.

King led May with 9 tackles, including 4 for loss, followed by Isidro Salinas (7 tackles and a tackle for loss), Flenniken (6 tackles and a tackle for loss), Halk (5 tackles), Harrell (4 tackles), Aaron McGinn (3 tackles and a tackle for loss), Bustamante (1 tackle), Damian Salinas (1 tackle) and Korbin Bass (1 tackle).

Next week, May hosts Santa Anna (4-2, 0-1), which dropped its district opener to Baird, 66-16, Friday night.

Blanket 60, Rising Star 14

RISING STAR – The Blanket Tigers, targeting a third district championship in a row, kicked off 15-A Division II action with a 60-14 road victory over the Rising Star Wildcats Friday night.

Blanket (5-2, 1-0) held the Rising Star (3-4, 0-1) offense to 185 total yards – 141 passing and 44 rushing – with three turnovers a week after the Wildcats produced a school-record 110 points against Waco Eagle Christian Academy.

Offensively, the Tigers churned out 328 yards – 256 on the ground and 72 through the air – with one turnover.

Hector Castaneda rushed for 130 yards and four touchdowns to pace Blanket while Brayden Day chipped in 94 yards on the ground with three scores. Brady Furry also rushed for a 19-yard touchdown.

Through the air, Carlos Morales completed passes of 40 yards to Tyler Simpson and 32 yards to Mario Morales.

Castaneda and Damon Carrillo led Blanket with nine tackles each followed by Day with six, Furry and Simpson with five apiece, and Hayden Rogers with four.

Next week, Blanket will enjoy its district bye before returning to action Oct. 23 at home against Sidney (4-2, 1-0), which hammered Panther Creek, 69-0, Friday night.

Richland Springs 47, Rochelle 0

ROCHELLE – The Class A Division II No. 2 Richland Springs Coyotes’ pursuit of a 19th consecutive district championship began with their 74th league win a row, 47-0 over the Rochelle Hornets in the 16-A opener Friday night.

Richland Springs (5-0, 1-0), which is also targeting a 10th state championship, limited Rochelle (2-5, 0-1) to negative-31 yards of total offense – minus-26 passing and minus-5 rushing.

The Coyotes needed just 92 yards of total offense – 46 rushing and 46 passing – to produce enough points to enforce the 45-point mercy rule by halftime. Richland Springs ran just 12 plays and owned possession of the ball for 4:27.

Jordan Burkhart completed all three of his pass attempts for 46 yards with two touchdowns – a 16-yarder to Jadeyn Bryant and a 15-yarder to Zane Capps – and rushed for 27 yards and a score. Bryant reached the end zone three times on the ground, amassing 19 yards, while T.J. Grant caught a 15-yard pass.

Standouts for the Richland Springs defense included Bryant with 4.5 tackles and 2 sacks, Grant with 4.5 tackles, and Kelton Lusty with 3 tackles.

Next week, Richland Springs hosts Cherokee (5-2, 1-0), which blanked Mullin, 47-0, in its district opener Friday night.

Comanche 38, Dublin 6

DUBLIN – The Comanche Indians kept their undefeated record intact Friday night as they opened District 5-3A Division II action with a 38-6 triumph over the Dublin Lions.

After a scoreless first quarter, Comanche (6-0, 1-0) opened a 14-0 halftime lead over Dublin (1-4, 0-1), which grew to 35-0 by the end of the third period.

The Indians manufactured 413 yards of total offense – 323 on the ground and 90 through the air.

Logan Wilkerson rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, Luke Wilson chipped in 93 yards and a score and Jorge Rios contributed 88 yards on the ground and a trip to the end zone.

Hudson Welch completed 4 of 14 passes for 90 yards as Blanton Gunter caught two passes for 66 yards and Bryce Hermesmeyer added a pair of grabs for 24 yards.

The Comanche defense – which has allowed no more than one touchdown in any game this season – recorded four sacks and intercepted three passes, one each by Hermesmeyer, Wilson and Cash Cook. Cook, Corrin Hill, Christian Holmes and Taelon Sorrells tallied the sacks. Cook led Comanche with 13 tackles followed by Wilson and Dom Rios with nine each, and Hermesmeyer with seven.

Next week, Comanche hosts Eastland (3-3, 1-0), which rolled past Millsap, 50-23, in its district opener Friday night.

Coleman 35, De Leon 0

COLEMAN – The Coleman Bluecats began District 4-2A Division I action with their fourth straight victory Friday night, blanking the De Leon Bearcats by a 35-0 count.

Coleman (5-1, 1-0) limited De Leon (1-5, 0-1) to 120 yards of total offense – 108 rushing and 12 passing.

Offensively, the Bluecats generated 258 yards – 168 on the ground and 90 through the air.

Corbin Rosales completed 5 of 7 passes for 90 yards with touchdowns of 43 yards to Dylan Mickler, who grabbed two catches for 47 yards, and 28 yards to Braxton Smith, who finished with two receptions for 38 yards.

Dayden Hunter led the Bluecats with 45 yards rushing while R.J. Wright ran for 42 yards and a 2-yard touchdown, Rosales also chipped in 42 yards on the ground, and Cort McFadden scored on a 26-yard carry.

Rosales contributed a 51-yard punt return for a touchdown as well.

Next week, Coleman welcomes Goldthwaite (2-4, 0-1), which is coming off a 64-6 loss to San Saba in its district opener.

Cross Plains 27, Santo 14

CROSS PLAINS – The Cross Plains Buffaloes remained tied for first place in District 8-2A Division II with a 27-14 home victory over the Santo Wildcats Friday night.

Cross Plains (6-1, 2-0), which tallied its fourth straight win, jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first period, but Santo (4-3, 1-1) closed the gap to 20-14 by halftime. The Buffaloes then tacked on an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Buffaloes defense forced seven turnovers – five fumble recoveries and two interceptions – and allowed 224 yards, including 201 on the ground.

Offensively, Cross Plains finished with 190 yards – 120 rushing and 70 through the air.

Cason Allen rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns, passed for 45 yards and another score, and caught a 13-yard pass. Cody McWilliams added 48 yards on the ground and scored once, while Wade Byrd finished with two receptions for 57 yards with a trip to the end zone.

Next week, Cross Plains heads to Meridian (3-3, 1-1), which pummeled Ranger, 62-0, Friday night.
