EARLY – The Early Lady Horns collected their third consecutive victory and upended Bronte for the first time in the volleyball program’s history, claiming a five-set home decision, 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 15-5, Friday evening.
“I am extremely proud of our team effort tonight,” said Early head coach Natalie Whitewood. “We pushed and battled so much, balls were not hitting the floor. It was the best game of the season for us and our first time in four years to beat Bronte. We’ve come close, but never finished with a win. I’m one happy camper.”
Alexa Portillo paced the Early offense with eight kills trailed by four each from Taylor Summers and Savannah Holt, and two by Gwen Phillips.
Grace LaRue registered 39 assists followed by Madie Waldorf with 14, Portillo and Carrigan Norris with 12 each, Summers with five, Grecia Yebra with two and Reagan Kirby with one.
Summers served a team-high seven aces while Norris and LaRue contributed one each.
Defensively, LaRue tallied six digs followed by two apiece from Norris and Portillo and one each by Yebra and Summers.
Holt logged a team-best six blocks while Yebra and Summers were credited with one apiece.
The Lady Horns (3-1) will attempt to stretch their win streak to four matches at noon Saturday as they host Class 4A Lampasas.
