Doris Parker Hughes, 98, passed away March 25, 2020 in Amarillo, Texas.  Doris, the youngest of four children, was born October 6, 1921, in Brownwood, Texas to William “Willie” Louis Parker and Carrie Una Gilley of Early.  Descended from early pioneer stock, her great grandfathers Hays B. Gilley came to Texas in 1835, before the Texas Revolution, and Thomas Louis Parker came from Cannon County, Tennessee.  A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, she was baptized in Steppes Creek, near Brownwood.  She married Gwin Horton Hughes of Brownwood on January 3, 1940.  They both worked at Camp Bowie during WWII, later moving to California, where Gwin worked in the shipyards.  She faithfully supported Gwin as they traveled all over Texas, Louisiana, new Mexico and North Dakota, working in the oil exploration industry.

She is survived by Linda Hughes Croft of Houston, Texas; Donlee Hughes (Kathy) of Harper, Texas; and Janice Hughes Newton (W.J. “Wib”) of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren Aimee Smitherman (Eric) of Chula Vista, California; Daniel Croft of Houston, Texas; Jared Newton of Amarillo, Texas; and Colton Newton of Austin, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gwin (having celebrated 67 happy years of marriage), her parents, sisters Ona Mae Clark and Loyce Salyer Wells, baby brother Jesse William Parker and son-in-law Keith Richard Croft.

A private graveside service will be held March 29, 2020 with burial in Jenkins Springs Cemetery in Early, Texas.  Services conducted by Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.
