Charles James Barnes, age 85, of Cross Plains and former Coleman resident, died Monday, March 23, 2020, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

A private double service for Charles and Nancy Barnes will be held at the Cross Plains Memorial Cemetery and private family viewing will be held on Friday at Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

He was born Charles James Barnes on February 21, 1935 in Cross Cut, Brown County, Texas, the only son of J. T. Barnes and Gladys Wyatt Barnes.  He grew up in Coleman and attended school here.  On November 4, 1955, he married Nancy Louise Orr in Coleman and she preceded him in death four days ago.  Charles worked in the oil field in the Far East and Europe.  He first went to work as an assistant driller for six months before becoming a tool pusher for Intairdril in Libya.  He later was named as rig superintendent over 24 rigs for the same company.  Charles then became operations manager for Basil-Intairdril,  drilling water wells for the royal family in Saudi Arabia.  He also was the operations manager for the Eastern Hemisphere and became the Product Line Operations Manager for Lindsey Liners.  In 1998 he finally retired and moved with Nancy to Cross Plains.  Although he was not a member of Lake Brownwood First Baptist Church, he attended there and helped to lead others to know Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Wayne Barnes and wife Sandra of Kingwood and Bobby Shane Barnes and wife Laura of Lafayette, Louisiana; one daughter, Jamie Kay Apple and husband Rickey of Cross Plains; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Carmelitta DeHart of Christianburg, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Please leave online condolences and kind messages for the family at www.livingmemorials.com.
