Brownwood News – Three Brown County organizations will receive extra funding thanks to action taken Monday morning, March 9, by the Brown County Commissioners Court.
Brown County Grants Coordinator, Bob Contreras, told Commissioners last month that Brown County applied for and received $20,628.29 in Unclaimed Capital Credits for Counties.

What are unclaimed capital credits? Electric Cooperatives that have lost contact with a previous customers sometimes report capital credits to the State Comptroller’s Office as unclaimed property. Texas law allows counties to claim a portion of these unclaimed credits and use them for specific programs.
What are the general uses of capital credits? The County Commissioners Court may use capital credits in eight ways:
- State or local economic development
- Small or disadvantaged business development
- To stimulate, encourage and develop business location and commercial activity in the county
- To promote or advertise the county and its vicinity or conduct a solicitation program to attract conventions, visitors and businesses
- To improve the extent to which women and minority businesses are awarded county contract
- To support comprehensive literacy programs that benefit county residents
- For the encouragement, promotion, improvement and application of the arts
- To support a children’s advocacy center
Commissioners approved, on a vote of 4-0, splitting the money between the Child Advocacy Center, CASA in the Heart of Texas and Brownwood Public Library. Each will receive approximately $6,876.
These capital credit funds are from 2018. The county may re-apply for 2019 funds.
