Brownwood News – Howard Payne University’s Model United Nations team participated in the Northwest Model United Nations (NWMUN) conference in Seattle. Brenden Hough, a sophomore from Brownwood majoring in the Guy D. Newman Honors Academy and practical theology, was recognized as one of three “Distinguished Delegates” selected from a committee of 195 students.

Including HPU’s team of six, 700 students from 25 institutions located in the United States and Canada attended the conference.

Model United Nations takes current world issues and asks students, who represent various countries as delegates, to try to solve them through diplomatic means. Students learn the art of diplomacy through caucusing, writing position papers and presenting in formal settings, all while following the model of the United Nations. While HPU has participated in Model United Nations for many years, this was the team’s third trip to the NWMUN conference.

“Our students love competing at this conference and, through their participation, were able to bridge political gaps to reach some great solutions to international problems,” said Dr. David Claborn, professor of government at HPU and faculty advisor for the group.
