Nora Jean (Bragg) Barnes, 85, of Brownwood passed away on Monday, December 23, 2019.

A visitation will be held from 6 – 8 PM Friday, December 27, 2019 at Heartland Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be at 2 PM Saturday, December 28, 2019 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with interment at a later date in the Ancho cemetery, Lincoln County, New Mexico.

Jean was born May 11th, 1934 in Benton, Arkansas to Julian Hunter and Nora Bragg.  She graduated from Benton High School.  Jean married J.W. Barnes on August 19th, 1963 and they began a life together that would bless them with 5 children.  She was a happy woman with a big heart who opened her door and kitchen to all people.  She made the best banana nut bread and could split wood like nobody’s business.  When her girls were in school she opened up her home to all of their friends and adopted every person and animal that they brought home with them.  She was always trying to feed everybody especially spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was kind of partial to her grandchildren.  She loved to give them a hard time and would always say “I need a shot of whiskey”, although she never drank a drop that they knew of.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was a beaming light of gentle love and happiness for them.

Jean is survived by her son, Jay and wife Geneva Barns of Albuquerque NM; daughters, Janet and husband Harold Musick of Brownwood, Cassandra Baskin of May, Tammie and husband Ed Hernandez; 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Jean is preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.W. Barnes; daughter, Peggy Esquibel, granddaughter Samantha Esquibel, and son-in-law, Randy Baskin.

Condolences, tributes and memorial can be given to the family at www.heartlandfuneralhome.net
