Velma Inez Byers, age 98, of Burkett, died Monday, November 18, 2019, at Holiday Hill Nursing Home in Coleman.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 21, in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with David Wallace officiating.

Interment will follow at the Burkett Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Velma Inez Byers was born January 15, 1921, in Albany, Texas, a daughter of Willard Manton Byers and Carrie Ann Tabor Byers.  She lived in Sedwick, Texas and Bienville, Louisiana where she attended school.  In 1948 she moved to Burkett and resided there until moving to live at the nursing home.  Velma loved to grow a garden and can vegetables.  She did hate picking cotton and much preferred to hoe it.   She was the only one that her Dad would let drive the mules and drop the seeds into the ground.

She was a member of the Burkett Church of Christ where she served faithfully for many years.    She loved teaching little children in Sunday School.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, Willard Byers, Vira Byers, Dora Byers Driskill, Esther Byers, Cora B. Robertson, Elvie Fay Hagar, Bernice Byers, Tom Byers, Charles Byers and Dan Byers.
