He joined the Marine Corps on January 11, 1950 and served proudly for six years active and six years active reserve.  During his years in the Marines, he was stationed in San Diego, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Camp Pendleton, California.  His last duty station was at the Marine barracks in Great Lakes, Illinois, where he met Ola Jean Smith.  Wayne and Ola Jean where married on February 5, 1953 at Lowrie Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado.

Wayne was an outdoorsman all of his life.  He loved hunting, fishing, camping and playing cards with groups of friends.  He even played semi-pro baseball as a young man and enjoyed all sports.  He always supported local sports teams and attended as many Bluecat games as he could.  Wayne helped with the C.H. Hale Prostate Foundation’s “Walk for a Cure” for many years and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Coleman.
