Brownwood School Board Meets – Recognizes Staff, Student and Local Business

Brownwood News – The Brownwood School Board of Trustees met on September 9.  The session was called to order by Board President, Michael Cloy. Tim Skaggs, Pastor of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, gave the invocation. Coggin Intermediate School 5th grade student, Jolea Chambers and 6th grade student, Kaylie Valdez, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
Brownwood ISD Deputy Superintendent, Liesa Land presented the Instructional Focus update. Land reported the improvement in the overall district’s grade from TEA, which is now a B. Land also provided a brief summary of the TEA grades for each campus including score improvements and new distinction designations at Brownwood Middle School and Northwest Elementary School. Although many of the scores had increased, Land indicated there is still work to be done and continued room for improvement.

RECOGNITIONS
The following groups and individuals were recognized by BISD and were presented with certificates highlighting their achievements.

The Brownwood ISD Spotlight recognizes members of the BISD faculty and staff who go the extra mile to ensure excellence in education for all our students. Spotlight recipients are chosen from peer nominations. September 2019 honorees were Northwest Elementary Pre-K Teacher, Martha Woods, and Coggin Intermediate School Head Custodian, Rosa Villarreal.

Outstanding Performer – Texas State UIL Solo & Ensemble Vocal Contest – Jordan Roberts Brownwood High School (BHS) senior, Jordan Roberts was recognized for being awarded an
“Outstanding Performer” from the UIL State Director of Music.

Brookshire’s Grocery Company
Brookshire’s was recognized for their generous donation of school supplies for the 2019-2020 school year.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
BISD Superintendent, Dr. Joe Young stated the 2019-2020 school year was off to a great start and congratulated the September Spotlight honorees.
DISCUSSION & ACTION ITEMS
DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS
Enrollment/Transfer Report: Dr. Young provided enrollment numbers as of 9-6-2019 as well as the Out of District transfer report as of 8-26-2019. The report indicated enrollment has risen over 100 students since the first day of school and it was noted that transfers into the district are up by six students as compared to last year.
CONSENT AGENDA
The following items were listed for consideration on the Consent Agenda.

3. Attorney Retainer
4. Adoption of TASB-initiated Policy Update 113
5. Brown County Extension Agents as Adjunct Faculty
6. Minutes from previous meetings
Trustee Evans moved that the Consent Agenda be approved as presented, with Trustee Jones seconding the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.

EXECUTIVE SESSION
The board moved into executive session at 6:45 p.m. to discuss personnel matters. They returned to open session at 7:49 p.m. No additional action was taken.
The meeting adjourned at 7:51 p.m.
