Margaret Turner Coleman died Friday, August 16, 2019 in Fort Worth, Texas. Her body will be cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date at Eastlawn Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home. She requested that there be no memorial service.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann C. McCrummen; two grandsons, Stephen C. and Andrew T. McCrummen; a step-brother, the Rev. Joe L. Turner a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Polly Coleman; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart S. Coleman, on June 2, 2014.
She was the daughter of Frances Bruce Turner and Jesse H. Turner, who preceded her in death, as did her brothers, Ben Orton and J.H. Turner, Jr.
Born in Brownwood (a third generation), Margaret attended Brownwood schools including Daniel Baker College and Howard Payne University. At Daniel Baker, she was elected Campus Sweetheart and in later years was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. She began her business career as society editor at the Brownwood Bulletin and served as secretary to the owner for 13 years. She and her husband founded Coleman Distributing Co. (wholesale beer distributing) in 1958 and sold it in 2008.
She and her husband were both active in civic and cultural affairs of Brownwood. In 1999, the Brownwood Depot Plaza was named in their honor.
Active in politics, Mrs. Coleman served as State Democratic Committeewoman for two terms, and during her second term was appointed by the Governor to chair Texas Women’s Organizations. In the past, she was active in local and national groups including Community Chest, Education 2000, Leukemia Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, and the New Business Formation Committee. She was a member of the Sam Houston Society of Austin, to which she was a lifetime member, Brownwood Hospital Auxiliary, and First United Methodist Church.
