Wanda Gray Powers, 92

Funeral services for Wanda Gray Powers, age 92, of Brownwood, will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Eastlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.  Wanda passed from this life on Sunday, June 9, 2019 in an Abilene hospital after a short illness.


Wanda Marie Cox was born on March 12, 1927, along with her twin sister Ronda, in Gustine to Perry J. and Grace (Keith) Cox.  She attended Gustine schools and graduated from Brownwood High School. She married Ronald Gray on May 9, 1947 in Brownwood. After the death of her first husband in 1995, she married R.T. Powers, Jr. in 1998.  Together they made their home at Lake Brownwood and Rockport. She worked for the Brownwood Independent School District as secretary at Central Office for 22 years. Wanda was a longtime member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.

Wanda is survived her grandchildren, Sam Stewardson and wife Laura of Brownwood, Ben Stewardson and wife Amy of Frisco, Hilary Stegemoller and husband Josh of Brownwood and Joe Stewardson and wife Meridith of Abilene; son-in-law, Dr. Tom Stewardson and wife Melinda of Buffalo Gap; eleven great-grandchildren, Thomas and Will Stewardson of Brownwood, Luke, Kirklyn and Quincy Stewardson of Frisco, Gus, Fritz and Goldie Stegemoller of Brownwood and Gray, Geyer and Gussie Lou Stewardson of Abilene; her twin sister Ronda Heather of Brownwood and a host of nieces and nephews.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Beverly Stewardson, husbands, Ronald Gray and R.T. Powers, Jr., her brother, Perry Cox and two sisters, Ganelle Cheves and Doris Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Building Fund of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, 1815 Coggin Ave, Brownwood, 76801 or to the Brownwood Education Foundation, 2707 Southside Dr, Brownwood, 76801.
