Brownwood News – With spring fast approaching, beekeepers nationwide are getting their supplies and equipment ready for this year’s cycle of seasonal chores.

“Honeybees really are kind of like a small herd of livestock,” according to local beekeeper Daniel Graham.  “They need food, water, shelter, and enough space to stay comfortable through the winter, and room to grow into as the colony expands in the spring and summer.”

If you have been thinking about getting into beekeeping, but unsure about what you need to get started, Graham is inviting you to a class designed just for you.  “I call it Fundamentals for Beginners, and it’s a fast-paced informative introduction to beekeeping.  I’ll show you the basic personal gear and the components of the hive itself, and cover other essentials like where to put the hive, how to protect it, how to get your bees, and bee behavior and safety.”

Two identical sessions will be offered:  Wed. Feb. 13 at 1 pm, and Sat. Feb 16 at 2pm.  Both sessions will be outdoors, behind Ricochet Antiques, at 705 West Commerce in Brownwood.  Class participants should bring their own lawn chairs, and dress for the weather. A handout will be provided, but bring your pen and notebook if you like.  The class fee is $20 per person.
