BrownwoodNews – The Brownwood-Brown County Health Department would like to acknowledge National Influenza Vaccination Week. National Influenza Vaccination Week is scheduled during the first week of December to remind people the importance of continuing the flu vaccination through the holiday’s season and beyond.

As long as flu viruses are spreading and causing illness, vaccination should continue throughout the flu season. Flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter seasons. Brownwood-Brown County Health Department encourages Brown County residents who have not yet been vaccinated for the flu to get vaccinated now.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The viruses attack the nose, throat, and lungs. Symptoms of the flu may include a sudden onset of fever, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, headaches, chills, and extreme tiredness. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccination each year.

No appointment is necessary to get a flu vaccine at the Brownwood-Brown County Health Department. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 11:30AM and to 1:00PM to 4:30 PM and until 6 PM every Wednesday. The Department accepts most private insurance and participates in the Texas Vaccines for Children Program.

For questions about qualification for the Texas Vaccines for Children Program or the flu vaccine, call 325-646-0554. For more information about the flu vaccine, please see the CDC website at www.cdc.gov.
