BrownwoodNews – The Brown County Museum of History will be hosting a Dinosaur themed family fun day this weekend.

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the 20th Kids and parents alike can experience “The Hunt For Fossils – Prehistoric Creatures!”

Museum director Wanda Ferguson says “each participant will get a chance to create and take home their own fossil collection.” A team of Earth Scientists will be on hand to help participants hunt through special ‘search trays’, identify a variety of fossils, create  fossils, and learn about each one.

“This is a great time for every age group to enjoy a hands-on activity together—there is something for everyone as we explore learning about these fascinating Prehistoric plant and animal remains. And every child will earn a certificate as a Junior Fossil Hunter.”

The Museum of History is presenting this learning event because this area is especially rich in fossils, and is known across the nation as a prime fossil-hunting location.

Alexia Bieniek, current President of the Texas Earth Science Teachers Association, explained that “colleges from across the United States bring their students to Brown County to study fossils. In fact, the area around Lake Brownwood contains one of the rarest of all –a sea urchin that is found nowhere else in the world but here!  It was even named for Brownwood: ‘archeocydaris brownwoodensis’.  It is very special to have a fossil named after an area—and Brown County is special—there are fossilized remains here from all three geologic time eras: the times before, during and after the dinosaurs.  This is very rare!”

“The Hunt for Fossils—Prehistoric Creatures!” will be come-and-go from 11:00 until 3:00 on Saturday, October 20th.  $5 for each child or adult participating (parents or grandparents accompanying a child are free). Brown County Museum of History at 209 N. Broadway, Brownwood.  For additional information: 325-641-1926.

It has been said that life finds a way, and you should find a way too, to the Brown County Museum of History this Saturday!
