Brownwood News – Texas Department of Transportation Brownwood District will begin a sealcoat project July 23rd to preserve area highways in Brown, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Lampasas, Mills, McCulloch, San Saba and Stephens counties.

Northeastern Pavers was awarded the contract for the project, which will begin in the city of Breckenridge, in Stephens County, on Monday, July 23rd.  This application of a seal coat in Breckenridge is anticipated to be completed in two days.  A final center striping will be completed in approximately one week.  Traffic should be minimally affected as lanes will remain open in both directions of travel.  Motorist should be cautious as various lane closures will occur.

The operation will move to SH 6, US 183 and SH 206 in Cisco, in Eastland County, on July 31st.  This portion of the project is expected to be complete by August 3rd.  Motorists should expect traffic delays as traffic is reduced to one lane.  A flagman and pilot car will guide traffic through the work zone.  

“Sealcoat is a layer of liquid asphalt which is topped with small rocks.  This is applied as preventative maintenance to seal cracks and provide new wearing surface to prolong the life of the roadway,” explained TxDOT Brownwood’s Director of Operations Eric Lykins, P.E.  “It also increases traction on the roadway.”  

The entire sealcoat project for this year is anticipated to be completed by the end of August.  Motorists are asked to use caution and slow their speed in areas of construction.  As the project progresses through other counties, notification will be given to the public through additional news releases and posts to TxDOT Brownwood District’s local Twitter account (@TxDOTBWD).
