Brownwood News – East Elementary students gathered in front of their school on May 1, 2018, as the local VFW raised new flags that they provided to replace the old worn and tattered ones. Retired Lt. Col. James Masters, VFW Post 3278 Commander, spoke to the students regarding Loyalty Day, which originally began as Americanism Day as a counter to the May 1st celebration of the Russian Revolution establishing the Communist Party.

“The first day of May is Loyalty Day and is a day filled with activities designed to involve everyone in a great display of loyalty to our flag and our country,” stated Masters during the brief ceremony. “Be proud to be an American. Fly your flag with pride.”

East Elementary principal, Nanda Wilbourn, noted that she didn’t initially realize the symbolism of having the ceremony on May 1st. 

“I had no idea that it was Loyalty Day until I contacted the VFW a couple of weeks ago and asked them about retiring our old and tattered flags and replacing them with new ones,” said Wilbourn. “We will do this and honor our Veterans every opportunity we have.”
