Brownwood News – The 9th Annual Empty Bowls event is happening today at the Brownwood Coliseum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 to 7 p.m. Cost for admission into the event is $10 and includes soup, crackers, water and your choice of a hand painted bowl.

“We have so many beautiful bowls this year,” said Leesa Stephens, Executive Director for Good Samaritan Ministries.

The Good Samaritan Ministries’ Empty Bowls Project will fight hunger in Brown County one empty bowl at a time on Thursday, April 5th. The emphasis of the event is the hand-painted bowls that attendees take home as a reminder that hunger exists in Brown County, in America, and around the world.

“We encouraged those painting bowls or making placemats to think about their friends and neighbors in need—real people, not just statistics on a page,” said Stephens. “There will be more than 1,000 bowls on display throughout the day for you to choose from,” said Stephens. “We will put out a nice selection at both the afternoon and evening sessions so no matter which one you choose to attend, you can leave with a beautiful hand-painted bowl.”

New this year: Artisan Bowl Auction. Ten artists in the Brownwood area were selected by Good Samaritan to contribute with their artwork on special heart-shaped bowls that will be sold via a silent auction at the event. The shape of the bowls ties directly into the logo for the Empty Bowls project.

The silent auction begins at 11 a.m., the same time the event gets underway and will continue until a “last call” just before 6 p.m. when the winners of the auction items will be announced. Auction winners do not need to be present to win, but they are asked to pick up their bowls at Good Samaritan within a week or the bowl will be awarded to the next highest bidder.

Last year’s event raised $27,819 to help fight hunger in Brown County through the ministry’s multiple food distribution programs.
