Brownwood News – Howard Payne University will host guest artist Christopher Adkins, principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO), in a recital on Thursday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Grace Chapel. There is no charge for admission and the recital is open to the public.

Adkins is the son of HPU alumna Dr. Alis Dickenson Adkins ’57. He studied music at the University of North Texas in Denton and at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was principal cellist with the New Haven Symphony. Adkins has also held positions with symphonies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Denver, Colorado. Adkins joined the DSO in 1987. He currently teaches repertoire and studio classes to cello students at the Southern Methodist University Meadows School of Arts where he joined the faculty in 1988.

Selections from the recital will include “Trio in A minor, Opus 114” by Johannes Brahms, “A Frog He Went A-Courting: Variations on an Old-English Nursery Song” by Paul Hindemith and other familiar melodies from several operas.

Accompanying Adkins in the recital on piano is HPU’s Dr. Elizabeth Wallace, chair and tenured professor of music. Stephen Goacher, professor of music at HPU, will accompany Adkins on the clarinet.

“Mr. Goacher and I are excited to collaborate with Mr. Adkins to bring fine music to the community,” said Dr. Wallace. “We encourage everyone to come enjoy this wonderful recital.”

For more information, please contact HPU’s School of Music and Fine Arts at 325-649-8500.

Applications are being accepted for the fall 2018 semester at Howard Payne University. HPU offers a variety of financial aid options, including scholarships for students from Brown County and surrounding counties. For more information about HPU, contact the Office of Admission at 325-649-8020 or by e-mail at enroll@hputx.edu.
