Brownwood News – Nearing its 10-year anniversary, the Good Samaritan Ministries’ Empty Bowl Project in Brownwood is expected to grow again. The event started nine years ago with just 500 bowls. This year the total is expected to jump to at least 1,500 and a lot of that has to do with organizations like Ranger College putting on events to help raise money and donate their time to paint bowls.

“This is a great way for people to help their community since 90 percent of the money raised stays in the local community,” said Ranger College assistant VP of Brown County Dayna Prochaska. “The 10 percent that doesn’t stay here in Brown County will go to help people across the world.”

So, what is the Empty Bowl Project?

If you are unfamiliar with the Empty Bowls Project, it is a community-wide fundraising event whose purpose is to raise funds and awareness of hunger both locally and globally. The majority of money raised at this event will stay in Brown County to help the food-insecure. This year, the ten percent tithe will go to an International hunger relief organization.

At the event, for a $10 ticket, attendees may choose a hand-painted ceramic bowl to take home and then dine on a simple meal of soup and water. The soup is donated by local restaurants. The empty bowl is yours to serve as a reminder of those in our own community and around the world who have empty bowls and empty stomachs. There is live music at the event and a special “store” set up with items from the ministry’s Resale Store.

This year’s Empty Bowls event will take place April 5th at the Brownwood Coliseum from the hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information on the Empty Bowl Project visit goodsambwd.org or call 325-643-2273.
