Brownwood Police Department Publishes 2017 Crime Statistics

Brownwood News – The Brownwood Police Department released the 2017 Crime Statistics report which details offenses ranging from minor traffic citations to more violent crimes like rape or murder.

According to a recent memo issued by the department, compared to 2016, Brownwood experienced increases in reported crimes this year. Burglary of a Building and Motor Vehicle Thefts were the only crimes showing notable decreases.

In general, increases in reported crimes have been attributed more to community members reporting more frequently rather than a spike in crimes committed.

For the 2017 calendar year compared to 2016, the percentage increases/decreases are: UCR Crime Category  Percentage Change 
Homicide 100% increase

Rape 25% increase

Robbery 270% increase

11 vs 3

Assault 2% decrease

429 vs 439

Burglary of Habitation 50% increase

75 vs 50

Burglary of a Building 33% decrease

Larceny/Theft 17% increase

Motor Vehicle Theft 30% decrease

The number of reported motor vehicle accidents decreased 9% (510 in 2016 compared to 465 in 2017). DWI arrests increased by 21% (95 in 2016 compared to 115 in 2017).

Officers made a total of 5381 Traffic Stops during 2017. This is a decrease of 24% over 2016 (7118 Traffic Stops).

Of those stops in 2017:

  • 61% were issued warnings
  • 39% were issued citations or an arrest/report was made

Of those stops in 2016:

  • 74% were issued warnings
  • 26% were issued citations or an arrest/report was made
