Press Release – The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service needs volunteers in Brownwood. Free training for your IRS tax preparer certification is available and no prior tax preparation experience is required. Tax preparation will be in late January through mid-April. Whether you are a student looking for experience, a retiree wanting to give back, a CPA needing continuing education credits, or just want to learn new skills while helping your community, we have a place for you.

VITA is a free, IRS-sponsored program to help low and middle-income workers and retirees have their income taxes prepared and filed electronically by an IRS certified volunteer. VITA also ensures that workers receive all the tax credits to which they are entitled. Volunteers are joining a program that has helped millions of people across the nation file tax returns at no cost for more than 40 years. Taxpayers who volunteer make a difference. This is people helping people and it’s that simple.

“Our goal is to not only offer free tax assistance, but to teach financial literacy so people will have the resources to manage their money” stated Hanna Adams, Executive Director of Central Texas Opportunities, Inc. This is the second year that CTO has sponsored a VITA tax preparation site in Comanche. They have now expanded to join with other regional agencies to form the Coalition for Financial Empowerment. The Coalition encompasses 27 counties in west central and west Texas. Volunteers are also needed in Comanche, Cisco, Coleman, Brady, San Angelo and Abilene.
