Brownwood News – The Brownwood Police Department promoted two of its officers in a brief ceremony held at the Law Enforcement Center on Tuesday. Sergeant Troy Carroll was promoted to Support Services Division Lieutenant. Corporal Jesse Mares was promoted to Patrol Sergeant.

“As a chief, these days to me are very important. They are the happiest days we have in our careers,” said Brownwood Police Chief Terry Nichols as the promotion ceremony commenced.

To be promoted, officers submitted to a testing process, which included review by an interview board consisting of law enforcement professionals as well as community leaders. First to be recognized in the ceremony was Sergeant Troy Carroll, as he was promoted to Support Services Division Lieutenant.

Carroll began his career in law enforcement in 1995 after graduating from Tarleton University.

“Troy is a true leader in our community,” said Chief Nichols. “I’ve found nothing this man cannot do,” the chief continued, calling Carroll a jack-of-all-trades.

Caroll’s wife, Jennifer, was present to pin his badge during the ceremony.

Next to be promoted was Corporal Jesse Mares to Patrol Sergeant.

Mares graduated from Brownwood High School, and later began his career in law enforcement with the Brownwood Police Department in 2011.

“As a testament to his hard work and tenacity, he has been quickly promoted throughout his years here,” Chief Nichols said. Mares was named Officer of the Year in 2016, and is an instructor with the police department in various tactics.

Mares’ wife, Carina, was present to pin his badge after the chief’s remarks.
