Brownwood News – The Brownwood City Council met at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12th, at city hall to discuss agenda items. The city council also held a public hearing on a proposal to increase total tax revenues from properties on the tax roll by 7.6% by adopting the proposed tax rate of $.7946 per $100 valuation.

Before the public hearing, Margaret Somereve with the Texas Coalition of Affordable Power presented the City of Brownwood with a $15,000 check as part of a savings/refund program TCAP offers city members.

The city council then opened the meeting for a public hearing session. No citizens stepped forward to address the council regarding the proposed tax increase, despite Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes previous encouragement to the community to offer their opinion on the subject.

After the public hearing session was closed, the city council heard a proposal from Brownwood Municipal District Development Director Guy Andrews to allow the BMDD to purchase just over 19 acres of land located at 2605 Morris Sheppard Drive. The council approved the proposal.

Also approved during the meeting:

*council authorized City Manager Emily Crawford to sign an agreement between Humana and the City of Brownwood, and the Brown County Health Department for participation as an in-network provider.

*council authorized City Manager Emily Crawford to sign an Interlocal Cooperation contract between Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Brownwood Fire Department for prescribed burn fire training exercises to be held at various times throughout the upcoming year. Brownwood Fire Chief Eddy Wood was present during the meeting to give a brief explanation as well as answer any questions from council members.
