Brownwood News – Four Early High School students are participating in a teen leadership program through Texas Midwest Community Network (TMCN). Part of the leadership program involves the teams to complete a project which will help or enhance their community.

Early High School seniors Tara Glasscock, Inayat Kang, Matthew Tarigan, and Dominque Smith are working together to beautify McDonald Park by building a mural wall and a small drought-resistant garden for the community to enjoy.

Business sponsors for the local team are the Early Chamber of Commerce and Russell Construction. Shawn and Gene Russell, the team’s business mentors, are very pleased with this year’s project.

“I think it’s exciting because it’s one of those things that’s going to be here forever,” said Shawn Russell. “People are going to be able to come here for decades. They’ve literally left their legacy here in Early.”

When asked why the team chose this particular project, they explained they wanted to create a bridge from the past to the future, honoring the history of the park, as an addition to the recent renovations.

“We want to restore all the memories that were created here,” said Inayat Kang. “A lot of people go to Coggin Park or Riverside Park, but we feel people in Early can enjoy this.”

“Early is a pretty small town,” added Dominque Smith, “We thought we could use a couple more attractions.”

The team is looking for sponsorship in the form of “purchasing” blocks for the wall. The sponsorship fee is $50 and each block purchased will have an inscription plaque on the back of the wall with your name or company. Block plaques can be purchased in four options: In memory of, In Honor of, or Offered By, or blank.

If you are interested in purchasing a block, you may call the Early Chamber of Commerce at 325-649-9317, or visit the chamber office at 104 E. Industrial Drive in Early.
