Life According to Kiera: Ready To Go

Written by Rowonna McNeely – It was a pretty quiet weekend at the McNeely house this weekend. We really needed that to be honest.

Mom, Kiera and I did load up and make a trip over to Stephenville on Saturday. First thing, we did was visit my Gram. She celebrated her 89^thbirthday on August 3rd. She is pretty amazing.

After visiting for a bit, we took Kiera over to the waterpark where we managed to effectively tire her out. She has always loved the two different waterslides there. It never fails, by the last hour she is literally dragging herself up the stairs just to go back down the slide.

From there, we decided to check out a new store. Kiera was perfectly content to go as long as she could look for a toy. No surprise there.

Mom and I dug through bins of items, looking for great deals as Kiera checked out the aisles surrounding us. “Mooomm. Can we go to the next aisle? I am not finding any toys.” She stated with a slight whine.

“Just a minute, baby. Let Grandmommy and I look right here for just a minute and then we will go look.” I replied.

I have to watch my exact wording now that she is older. I have been called on the carpet a couple of times for using the phrase, “Just a second.” She actually asked me the other day if I knew what a second meant.

“Ok.” She responded as she continued to search the shelf in front of her for a toy.

A few minutes later, I gave in and Kiera and I moved on to another aisle. She was happy walking down the aisles looking at random items and finding the odd toy here and there. She settled on a couple of smaller toys and examined them as she followed behind me through the store.

It was about an hour in to our shopping expedition that her tired began to set in. As Mom and I were discussing whether or not I should buy an item, Kiera pulled a step stool off the bottom shelf and set it on the ground. She then grabbed her toy out of the basket, sat on the stool and continued to study her toy.

Making a decision on the item, I turned and assured Kiera we would not be much longer. We began to make our way to the front, stopping occasionally to look over a shelf.

She did great. She never really complained about how tired she was or that she was ready to go.

Mom, Kiera and I turned into the Electronic section and I began to peruse the bins. We were standing about 10 feet from the cashiers. It was at that point Kiera let me know she could not handle anymore. She began to sing in her sweet, quiet voice, “I’m ready to goo… I’m ready to goooo. I’m ready to go.”

As she sang, she smiled and danced down the aisle towards the registers. She continued singing while Mom followed her. Kiera danced right into line. I grabbed one last item and headed for the register.

I need to remember that trick. Although, I’m pretty sure I won’t get as many ‘you’re so cute’ looks if I dance and sing that same song in a store.

Rowonna McNeely works with her husband, Aaron, at Willie’s T’s in the Art Department, regularly volunteers in the community, and has her hands full with her daughter, Kiera, along with two dogs and one cat.

Rowonna is a graduate of May High School (Go Tigers!) and grew up on a dairy farm. She enjoys reading, creating, swimming, and planning events. She’s also a bit of a klutz.
