Press Release – A Smithsonian exhibit that is touring the country is now on display for a limited time at the Lehnis Railroad Museum in Brownwood. It is the first exhibition of its kind for the Smithsonian, and is titled “I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story.” Traveling to only 13 locations nationwide, it is rich with compelling, often surprising stories. The exhibition takes a sweeping look at the history of Asians in America.

The exhibition, organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), tells the stories of early Asian immigrants participating in key moments in American history. Asian immigrants panned in the gold rush, hammered ties in the Transcontinental Railroad, and fought on both sides in the Civil War. Through the decades, Asian immigrants struggled against civil rights violations and internment during World War II. From the builders of some of the earliest railroads to the modern day, this exhibit shows how Asian Americans enrich the culture of our nation, and continue to help write the remarkable story of America.
“We are extremely proud to be able to host this Smithsonian exhibit” said Curator Beverly Norris. “And there are a series of special events to celebrate its being here.” Every Saturday in August and until September 23rd there will be special family-friendly events. Crafts, scavenger hunts, book readings and a chance to learn Chinese words and greetings make multiple opportunities for children of all ages to experience diverse cultures.
This exhibition will be on display through September 23, 2017. The Lehnis Railroad Museum is located at 700 E. Adams in Brownwood. Hours are 10:00 to 4:00 Tuesday – Saturday. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children, with under age 5 free.
“A Taste of Asia” will be held on August 17th at 5 p.m. as a special event to celebrate the traveling Smithsonian exhibit currently on display at the Lehnis Railroad Museum. Guests are invited to come experience this special exhibit and enjoy small bites and beverages from the Asian Pacific heritage.
