Written by Jason Mueller – To ensure community compliance, the City of Brownwood provides building permits for homeowners and commercial builders for many projects. Certain smaller projects oftentimes do not need permits. However, how do you know when a permit is required for your home project?

The City of Brownwood has adopted numerous building codes for the safety and well-being of the community. Some of the new codes adopted include, but are not limited to:
- 2011 National Electric Code
- 2009 International Building Code
- 2009 International Fire Code
- 2009 International Fire, Plumbing, Gas Codes
- 2009 International Residential Code
All projects that require a permit must conform to these specific codes set in place that the city has adopted in the recent years.
When is a Permit Not Required?
Smaller projects such as roof replacement of shingles, tiles, etc. and painting are not required to have a permit or inspection. Fences that are under 6 feet do not need a permit to be installed. However, fences at 6 feet or higher, do require a permit. The fence in the front yard must be 4 feet or shorter and cannot interfere with traffic sight for those driving in the neighborhood.
When is a Permit Required for a Project?
Permits and inspections are required for many mid-sizes to large projects in a home or office building. When you work with a professional general contractor, they will usually handle all the required permits for you. Some of the work that requires a permit includes, but is not limited to:
- Foundation
- Room Additions
- Framing and Structural Roofing
- Electrical Wiring
- Piping for Sewer, Water or Gas
- Replacing Windows, Doors or Sheet Rock
- Adding a Driveway
- Pre-Fabricated Storage Building Addition
Projects with Permits Require Inspections
Inspections are required for those projects that require a permit. This is done through a professional that comes out and inspects the completed work. Written approval of the work, as well as a permit is required before starting the work. Once finished, an appointment must be made with the Building Permit Office. The permit office at the Brownwood courthouse can provide further information regarding the project you have and whether you need a permit. If you do, applications can be printed and handed in either in person or through mail.
