Life According to Kiera: No Privacy

Written by Rowonna McNeely – “Oh, those girls.” Kiera said, her voice laced with humor.

I had just walked in the house from the back yard to wash my hands. Aaron and I had been working most of the morning on an outdoor project while Kiera had been inside alternating between watching cartoons and playing with her babies.

I smiled and turned to face her as she walked in from her playroom. “What did they do?” I asked.

“They’re just being silly. Well, Pumpkin was hungry and I made her some food but she only ate one bite.” She answered with a sigh.

In case you don’t remember, Pumpkin is the Baby Alive that can actually pee. I’m sure there is a nicer way to phrase that, but… Anyway, Kiera learned from a YouTube video how to make her own food for Pumpkin.

I’ll go ahead and educate you in the process, just in case you ever need to know. First, take a piece of paper and your color choice of marker. Color a section of paper. Fill a small bowl with water and place the colored piece of paper in the water. Wait a couple of minutes and the water turns that color. Remove the paper and ta-da! You now have Baby Alive food.

“Ahh…” I responded.

Before I could finish my thought, she continued on. “I put her food in the refrigerator.”

I opened the refrigerator to see a small, uncovered bowl of green water with a baby spoon sitting on the middle shelf. “Oh. Well, you could dump it and make more later.” I suggested.

“No. It’s ok. I think she will eat it better once it is cold.” She shrugged her shoulders and moved back into the playroom. I looked back at the uncovered bowl weighing my options. I could either dump it and see if she noticed or leave it and see if Aaron noticed. I chose the latter.

I turned back to the sink just as Kiera re-entered the kitchen.

“Did you see what I did, Mom?” She asked.

I finished washing my hands as I replied, “No, baby. What did you do?”

“You remember that big box?” She asked. I nodded and she continued. “Well, my babies just would not stop getting into stuff.”

She sighed again. “They just would not listen. When I am fixing one baby’s hair, the other babies just keep on getting into everything. I finally fixed a spot in that box so they can’t get into it.”

I followed her into the playroom to admire her remodeling. “That looks great, baby.” I praised her. “I can see how that would help.”

“It is better.” She huffed dramatically and tossed her hands in the air. “I just couldn’t ever get any privacy.”

I refrained from laughing out loud and rolling my eyes as I flashed on all the times the bathroom door bursts open on any given day.

I grinned broadly at her, before saying, “I can only imagine, honey. I can only imagine.”

Rowonna McNeely works with her husband, Aaron, at Willie’s T’s in the Art Department, regularly volunteers in the community, and has her hands full with her daughter, Kiera, along with two dogs and one cat.

Rowonna is a graduate of May High School (Go Tigers!) and grew up on a dairy farm. She enjoys reading, creating, swimming, and planning events. She’s also a bit of a klutz.
