BISD Press Release – Brownwood ISD will destroy some special education records from the 2011-12 school year as they are no longer required by state and federal law, but parents and guardians interested in retaining these records can request copies.

[adrotate group=”8″]

Special education records collected by Brownwood ISD related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement or provision of special education in the district are required by state and federal law to be retained for five years after special education services have ended for a student. When a student who receives special education services is no longer eligible for those services, graduates, completes his or her educational program at age 22, or moves from the district, special education services cease.

After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, though they may be useful to a parent or guardian or the former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance or other matters.

This notification is to inform parents, guardians and former students of Brownwood ISD’s intent to destroy the special education records of students who were no longer receiving special education services as of the end of the 2011-12 school year. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent, guardian or eligible adult student notifies the school district otherwise.

The parent, guardian or eligible adult student may request a copy of the records in writing or in person at the following address by Monday, July 24:
